b.Blunt talks to Glori & Cassie, who started Glassy, a cannabis accessory shop, where you can choose from a beautiful collection of curated pipes, apparel, and lighters that best represent your style. These two #girlbosses want you to be just as excited to show off your new pipe as you are to wear your new shoes.
The two of us have been best friends for going on eight years now, but we’ve known each other since we were little blonde babies – we were in the same preschool class! We had been toying with the idea of opening our own boutique for a while, and we felt super motivated after the 2016 election and Glassy really started taking shape.
Like so many others, we were heartbroken when Trump was elected. The fact that an ill-qualified madman who had openly admitted to sexually harassing women could be elected president was a big fat slap in the face. We wanted to create something that would both let us inspire and encourage other likeminded women and allow us to actively support organizations we believe in, like Planned Parenthood and the ACLU.
We were tossing ideas around for our boutique – and smoking pot – when we conceptualized Glassy. We knew we had to create a chic, fashion-forward shop for women, like us, who smoke weed!
Who is your ideal audience? Who shops at Glassy?
Our ideal audience – and our current customers – are intelligent, creative, driven women (and some men!) who use cannabis. Our customers are thrilled to find chic cannabis accessories, just like us. Every single product we sell is something we absolutely adore. We are super selective about what products we carry, and we both have to be 100% obsessed with something to bring it into the shop. Because we also use all of our products ourselves, we’re able to stand behind every product we sell personally.
How would you describe your brand and service to someone new to cannabis?
To us, Glassy is about more than just cannabis, although obviously, that’s a huge part of it. Glassy is about women feeling empowered to do whatever it is that lights their fire, without worrying about how it may be perceived or judged. As friends, our motto was “You Do You” long before we launched Glassy – it’s something we’ve said to each other, and the people around us, for years. People in general, and women specifically, get so caught up in pleasing those around us, but we should be worrying about pleasing ourselves.
Embracing cannabis use definitely falls under that umbrella – we feel that those who want to use cannabis shouldn’t have to keep quiet about it, or be relegated to shopping for accessories in the traditional dark, dingy, male-dominated head shop environment. Glassy provides an inclusive space where everyone can feel comfortable shopping, asking questions, and where they can find some dope-ass paraphernalia, too.
What are your best-selling products, and why?
Our most popular product is our Rose Quartz Pipe, which isn’t surprising because it was also the first product we decided to sell. The first time we saw a Rose Quartz Pipe, it felt like we had found the pipe we were always meant to have. We also donate 10% of the profits from both our Rose Quartz and Clear Quartz pipes to Planned Parenthood, so it feels great to know that we’ve supported an organization we believe in.
Do you have to live in an adult-legal or medical state to order products?
Nope – our products can be used for tobacco in states where cannabis is illegal, so we will ship anywhere 🙂
In your opinion, what is the biggest challenge in the cannabis industry right now, specifically for women? What motivates you to keep going?
Right now the cannabis industry is so new that it’s is one of the most exciting places to be – there is almost limitless potential, but that also means that there’s an equal amount of uncertainty. Things that are easy for new businesses in other industries, like finding a payment processor to accept credit card payments or advertising on Facebook, can be extremely difficult or impossible for us. In terms of being women in the industry, for us, it’s been about trying to broaden the perspective on what it means to be a woman and a cannabis user. Considering that we (two women) are creating a brand that is specifically targeting like-minded women, its incredible how many men have felt comfortable giving us (unsolicited) advice about the brand and business we’re cultivating…like, hellooo this is NOT FOR YOU. It’s hard for them to understand, but don’t worry, we keep letting them know.
What’s next for the Glassy brand?
We are planning to open a brick and mortar shop within the next year – we want to create a chic and welcoming store where women – whether they’ve experienced cannabis users or newbies dipping a toe in the pool – feel comfortable, welcome, and safe.
Where are you located? What’s the weed scene like there?
We are located in Boston, and we’re both originally from western Massachusetts (Northampton, MA), so we feel very at home here in New England. Despite the fact that recreational cannabis was legalized in MA in 2016, there is still a lot of hesitancy and shame surrounding cannabis use. It’s still a taboo, and we are doing our best to help change that. We’re really looking forward to the first recreational shops in MA opening in July because we think it’s going to initiate a massive shift in the conversation and perception surrounding cannabis.
