b.Blunt Talks: A Pot for Pot makes growing at home easy

This week b.Blunt sat down with Joshua Mezher, the founder and innovator of A Pot for Pot, a new company based in Oakland, California that is making growing at home easy and fun!

Joshua, and his business partner Jason Levin, started A Pot for Pot to empower people to grow their own medicine, and combat the stigma that pot is difficult to grow. They will also help you every step of the way.

Hobbyists and first-time growers can purchase a kit to grow their own clean, green weed at home (it only takes about 30-45 minutes to set up).

There is a 2 gallon kit is designed for an auto-flowering seed, which typically yields 1-4 ounces (28 – 112 grams). And a 5 gallon kit uses an auto-flowering or regular seed, which can yield up to 1 pound (454 grams).

Everything you need is in the box.  Just add water, sunshine, and a little bit of love.

Tell us about yourself, how did you come up with the idea for A Pot for Pot? And, what attracted you to the cannabis industry?

Everything came full circle with this idea when I was a teenager and my Dad’s business partner caught me trying to germinate a seed in the boiler room. I guess that was the start of my career in the cannabis industry. I remember ditching school when I was 15 to attend the “Free the Weed March” in London. I have always had the belief that cannabis can have a profound impact on our culture by expanding our minds and healing our bodies.

In 2009 I moved back to the USA, from England, to attend college in Santa Cruz. There I learned you could legally grow cannabis.  This blew my mind, and it did not take me long to build up from a hobbyist grower to growing full time. I always have some extra plants and pots, so its been a habit of mine to give pots out in the summer to friends. Then, last November, my business partner Jason Levin and I were walking through a gardening shop, and the idea struck us. We have been running with it since.

Tell me more about the product. It looks really easy!

That is the idea.  There is a misconception that growing cannabis is really hard!  While that might be true when you’re farming cannabis at scale, it doesn’t have to be the case.  It’s called weed for a reason after all. All the plant needs is good soil, the right ingredients, and a little bit of know-how. What we are selling is a box of fun and empowerment that lets you grow your own pot with ease.  And with full sun or a good indoor light, it can yield a surprising amount. We also encourage people to grow with auto-flowering cannabis. This makes it even more accessible as the plant does not require a precise lighting schedule.

Who is your ideal audience? Who buys A Pot for Pot?

Hobbyists and first-time growers. As it turns out most people who smoke cannabis want to try growing it at least once. We have two versions of our kit: one for first-time cannabis growers and one for existing growers who want to quickly scale their grow with our setup.

What are your best-selling products?

Our 2 Gallon Complete Kit is our best seller right now.  It’s the most affordable and probably the cuter of the two.

Do you have any grow tips for first timers?

Don’t spend a lot of money on your 1st setup! Too often people spend thousands on fancy tents and all this other stuff. Then they have a bad 1st harvest and give up. I would suggest building your way up from one grow to the next.

Do you have to live in an adult-legal or medical state to order A Pot for Pot?

We ship our kits all over the world. Our product contains nothing that is illegal, which puts it into the ancillary category, thankfully.

What were some of the things that you learned unexpectedly since starting your cannabis business?  Have there been any challenges that you’ve had to overcome?

As an entrepreneur your job is being a problem solver.  Not a single day goes by without Jason and myself finding creative solutions to fresh problems. Cannabis business discrimination is a real thing.  After our cannabis co-working space closed down, we really struggled to find a warehouse who would accept us. We had people trying to charge us 3x the rent. It was a total nightmare.  At one point we were building boxes out of the back of our uHaul! Then after getting the keys for a spot, we had a landlord chase us down in the parking lot to get his keys back after he looked us up and saw our gardening kits were for pot. We eventually struck gold after posting in a local cannabis community forum.  A local ancillary cannabis business let us rent a space in their warehouse. Lesson learned, fall back on your community for help when you need it.

Whats been the reaction among your peers?

Very positive.  People really seem to love the product and how we branded it.  We really put our hearts into it and tried to make it as friendly as possible. It’s one of those products that just makes sense.

How was cannabis introduced to your lifestyle? Do you have a favourite cannabis related story or memory?

Not to put my Mom on blast or anything, but she is an original hippy, so cannabis has kinda always been around the house.  So I would say that she was the primary influence. Not to be biased, but I have always loved making things myself. And for sure the first time I harvested my own flowers is a powerful memory. I had just moved to California where I was living in Santa Cruz County. I set up a small CFL grow under the house in the basement where I grew one Lemon Skunk, Afghan Kush, and a Jack Herer. They were all the cutest little auto-flowering plants.

What’s next for the A Pot for Pot brand?

We have a few exciting partnerships with some of my favourite brands in the industry that we will be rolling out over the next few quarters. Otherwise, our primary focus is on building boxes and continuously improving it. Then we have what I call our Sunday Projects, which we have code-named “a Lamp for Plants,” and “a Room for Pot.”

Where are you located and what is the weed scene like there?

We are in Oakland, California. The medical cannabis scene pretty much started here. There are lots of remarkable local events from Ganga Yoga to pop-up black markets which vanish in a cloud of smoke as quickly as they set up. You really can’t walk too far in this town before your picking up the smell of wafting pot.
