This week, we talk with Sharon Reid, co-founder of a new innovative natural beauty brand called CBeautyDifferently (CBDBeauty). Sharon and her business partner Marisa Lea decided to to launch a CBD infused beauty line after a rather spirited discussion centered around the healing properties of CBD oil.
Both Marisa and Sharon are firm believers in aging healthily as opposed to ‘anti-aging’. No Botox or fillers for these beauty entrepreneurs, they rely instead on the CBeautyDifferently products to help maintain, their glowing, radiant, complexions!
CBeautyDifferenly offers three natural and non-toxic products, Cannabalm, Esentual Oil and CBD Enriching Oil suitable for sensitive skin. These products are made with high-quality CBD and Marula oils and the perfect stocking stuffer for anyone on your list.
Thanks, we love it too. My business partner and Co-Founder, Marisa Lea came up with the tag line. I wanted our name to relate to our key ingredient; CBD oil, hence the original name: CBD Beauty. Marisa then came up with CBeautyDifferently which is obviously a play on CBD and it also fits neatly into the whole diversity conversation.
The idea behind our range was down to a pimple! I had a pimple that had stubbornly taken up residence on my face, after reading about the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD oil I decided to use it on said spot and to my surprise it literally disappeared within a few days!
We only launched a few months ago so we’re still working our day jobs! Marisa’s a teacher and I work part-time in recruitment, I’m also the Lifestyle Editor at MI Business Mag
What attracted you to the cannabis industry?
I was and still am, interested in how the cannabis industry has evolved (and continues to evolve) in the US and Canada. We’re based in the UK and therefore a good decade behind this movement. Fortunately, we are now having a grown up conversation about the health benefits, which is a start. I would love to have a business selling a range of cannabis derived products, but due to the current law there are restrictions.
Who shops at CBeautyDifferently? What are your most popular products and why?
Our demographic comprises of mainly women aged between 19-55+. We love the fact that our products are trans-generational. However, we want to make it clear that our products are suitable for everyone, my husband loves it for instance and is forever being commented on his skin!
Cannabalm is our most popular product, feedback has been extremely positive so far. Our customers tend to like the convenience as it’s contained in a handy roller bottle; it’s multipurpose, it can be used on the face, body & hair; oh and pretty good value for money due to the rich ingredients a little really does go a long way!
What is the difference between CBD and Marula Oil?
CBD Oil derives from cannabis (but contains no or minute amounts of THC) – it’s a naturally occurring cannabinoid with extensive health benefits. Marula Oil is an antioxidant-rich oil which comes from the Marula fruit native to South Africa. We found it to be a perfect complement to CBD Oil.
Any recommendations for Holiday gift giving?
Our Enriching Oil will make for an ideal gift, it’s housed in a cute 30ml dropper bottle so can be added to shampoo, conditioner, moisturizer, etc. And our EScentual Oil fragranced with pure, natural essential plant oils with middle notes of neroli, is great for those who like their oils scented.
Do you ship to the US?
Yes, we ship to most places around the globe where CBD is legal.
What were some of the things that you learned unexpectedly since starting your journey? Have there been any challenges that you’ve had to overcome?
We discovered that banks and merchants didn’t want to work with us. Having a cannabis derived business is deemed high risk; one merchant I spoke with compared it to how the Vape industry was once viewed. This cautious approach is pretty ridiculous considering our products are natural, totally non-toxic and derive from plants!
Being viewed as an ‘adult business’ adds a certain edge I suppose!
How did you get introduced to cannabis, and is it a part of your everyday life?
Like many people who had grown up in a Caribbean household (Jamaican in my case), cannabis would’ve been used for medicinal purposes; it would be drunk as a tea or infused in rum, to cure a plethora of ailments. Frankly, our elders were light years ahead!
Marisa and I don’t smoke weed; smoking negates a lot of the health benefits. It low key frustrates me the way smoking is glamorised especially across social media, weed smokers are better off eating edibles or better still taking it in oil form – more natural and cleaner. I make no apologies for being anti-smoking, besides smoking is terrible for your skin; we are advocates for good skincare, so we’re really mindful with what we eat and do to our bodies.
Where are you located? What’s the weed scene like there?
We are in London, UK. I can’t comment on the ‘weed scene’ , however we appear to be at the beginning of a burgeoning CBD industry. With that said, CBD businesses are still very much on the fringe despite the fact that CBD and cannabis oil have received a fair bit of mainstream coverage, there are still a lot of people who either haven’t heard of CBD or they’ve heard of it but have misconceptions- we find ourselves taking on the role of educators; we’re about feeding skins and minds!
CBD is currently legal in the Uk. Cannabis oil can be taken for medicinal purposes but would only be prescribed if all other medical treatments have been exhausted!
