This week we sat down with buzzn, the new kid on the CBD scene. Created by a pharmacist in New York, this is a line of super-powered, high quality CBD supplements that promote healing in humans and their furry sidekicks.

I love the name buzzn! How did you come up with the idea/concept? What were you doing before you founded buzzn?

Thanks! buzzn is short for buzzing. It was very random on how we came up with the name. We had so many names picked out but didn’t love them so we kept going back to the drawing board and brainstorming. One day I told my business partner let’s explore the word buzz, considering CBD was super trendy and essentially it was really all the buzz lately. So we were being silly saying things like ‘let’s get buzzing’ and eventually picked buzzn as our official brand name. Our social handles are actually @getbuzzn.

Our concept was to be playful with our branding in order to really destigmatize hemp. We wanted to push the boundaries of something that’s been so stigmatized and see it as something completely normal. We’ve taken cannabis way too seriously. The impact of the last centuries perception of cannabis still hangs heavy over the world, and it’s time that really changes. It’s cool to see drastic social shift underway and we’re so excited to be a part of it.

Before buzzn. I’m a licensed Pharmacist practicing in NY. I was working as a Pharmacy Manager at CVS. And also I own a dog walking company called Urban Wag based in Brooklyn. Through Urban Wag, we work closely with many rescue dogs, including Korean K9 Rescue group, a non-profit organization that saves dogs from dog meat farms in Korea and helps find them a home in NYC. While working with dogs who have been through a lot of trauma, I discovered the benefits of using CBD oil in rescue dogs’ diets as a mood stabilizer. This discovery led me to launch my own brand but I wanted to do it better. My goal was to make high-quality products with transparent ingredients.

Tell me about the products. Who uses buzzn products?

We currently have 5 products. They’re broad-spectrum CBD products meaning it’s rich in phytocannabinoids (100+ cannabinoids derived from the plant) without detectable levels of THC. Our oils include Chill Mint and Orange Bliss, each have 500mg of CBD in our 1 oz bottle. Then we have 2 pet products, one oil called Puppy Potion (250mg of CBD in 1 oz bottle) and dog treats called Chill Bites (2mg of CBD per treat). Lastly, our CBD salve called Super Powered Healing Balm (1000mg of CBD in 2 oz jar). All of our products are third-party lab tested for purity and consistency.

We have so many different people using CBD, but our biggest customers are those seeking a natural remedy for anxiety for themselves and/or their pups!

Where do you see the product line going next?

We have a few new products in the pipeline. We’re looking into CBD infused drinks and also face masks! We’re still trying to figure out what direction we really want to go, or just create them all and become a lifestyle brand.

What were some of the things that you learned unexpectedly since starting buzzn?  Have there been any challenges that you’ve had to overcome?

I didn’t realize how many competitors there really were, it’s insane. Everyone and their moms are literally jumping on the CBD craze. However, that’s not to say that a lot of the companies out there carry high quality products. My advice to the consumer is to really do your research, where is the hemp being sourced? Is it lab tested? What type of hemp extraction? Is it a full/broad-spectrum or isolate? It’s really important to ask these questions to know what you’r really getting when buying CBD products.

I think the biggest challenge right now for us is marketing. Because of the grey legal issues with CBD, we’re still unable to market CBD products on google and any social media platforms. So we’re trying to get creative on how we can get our brand out there.

Do you have a favorite cannabis related story or memory?

I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite story, but definitely the most memorable and traumatic. But I’m too embarrassed to share it. Let’s just say when I was younger I thought the brownies my cousin made were just brownies!

Where are you located? What’s the weed scene like there?

We’re located in Brooklyn, NY. There really isn’t much of a weed scene here, unlike California or Colorado. I feel like people in NY just keep to themselves and we all just smoke weed behind closed doors. I might be completely wrong and it’s just me being lame, but that’s my take on it.
